"There is nothing gradual about the lower end of the Canyon. When you are on the river, hemmed in by soaring cliffs for 277 miles and, perhaps, for a period of two to three weeks, it's something of a shock to round a bend into open sky and find that you are out. Along the north-south escarpment of the Grand Wash Cliffs, the elevated country that began with a gentle slant of the earth's crust at Lee's Ferry, walling in your personal cosmos, ends only too abruptly." --Martin Litton
