Photographing on a winter day at the West Thumb Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park is an amazing experience.

Photography Tip: Fog, steam, snow, and gray skies are your friend. As a landscape photographer these are all wonderful conditions for two reasons. 1. Fog and mist lowers the range of contrast which makes it easier for the camera to hold detail everywhere in the frame. 2. Thick atmosphere hides distracting elements in the frame.

The key is to find a strong shape, a compelling subject, that can hold the viewer's attention amongst all the gray.
I will be leading another Yellowstone in Winter Photography Workshop this February. This small group field photography adventure is a great opportunity to see the world's first National Park in its quietest season. More details at http://bit.ly/1NKVay2
